The State of Texas Attorney General Takes Legal Action Against Acetaminophen Producers Regarding Autism Spectrum Claims

Judicial Action
Ken Paxton, who supports former President Trump seeking election to US Senate, alleged pharmaceutical manufacturers of hiding safety concerns of acetaminophen

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing the manufacturers of Tylenol, claiming the firms withheld alleged dangers that the medication created to children's cognitive development.

This legal action follows a month after President Donald Trump publicized an unsubstantiated connection between taking acetaminophen - also known as acetaminophen - during pregnancy and autism in young ones.

Paxton is filing suit against J&J, which previously sold the medication, the sole analgesic recommended for women during pregnancy, and the current manufacturer, which now manufacturers it.

In a declaration, he stated they "misled consumers by making money from discomfort and pushing pills without regard for the dangers."

The manufacturer states there is insufficient reliable data tying Tylenol to autism spectrum disorder.

"These companies lied for decades, knowingly endangering numerous people to boost earnings," the attorney general, from the Republican party, said.

The manufacturer commented that it was "very worried by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the security of acetaminophen and the possible consequences that could have on the well-being of women and children in America."

On its official site, the company also stated it had "regularly reviewed the applicable studies and there is lacking reliable evidence that demonstrates a verified association between consuming acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder."

Organizations representing medical professionals and healthcare providers concur.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has said paracetamol - the primary component in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for expectant mothers to manage discomfort and elevated temperature, which can pose serious health risks if not addressed.

"In multiple decades of investigation on the consumption of acetaminophen in pregnancy, zero credible investigations has successfully concluded that the consumption of paracetamol in any period of gestation causes neurological conditions in children," the group commented.

The lawsuit cites latest statements from the Trump administration in arguing the drug is reportedly hazardous.

Last month, Trump generated worry from medical authorities when he told pregnant women to "fight like hell" not to take Tylenol when ill.

The US Food and Drug Administration then issued a notice that doctors should contemplate reducing the usage of Tylenol, while also declaring that "a causal relationship" between the medication and autism in children has remains unverified.

Health Secretary Kennedy, who manages the Food and Drug Administration, had promised in April to conduct "extensive scientific investigation" that would establish the source of autism in a short period.

But authorities cautioned that identifying a sole reason of autism - believed by scientists to be the outcome of a complex mix of genetic and environmental factors - would prove challenging.

Autism is a type of enduring cognitive variation and impairment that impacts how individuals experience and relate to the surroundings, and is recognized using doctors' observations.

In his court filing, the attorney general - who supports Trump who is running for the Senate - asserts Kenvue and Johnson & Johnson "willfully ignored and tried to quiet the research" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

This legal action seeks to make the firms "destroy any promotional materials" that asserts Tylenol is safe for pregnant women.

This legal action mirrors the grievances of a assembly of mothers and fathers of young ones with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who filed suit against the manufacturers of acetaminophen in two years ago.

Judicial authorities threw out the lawsuit, declaring studies from the family's specialists was not conclusive.
