🔗 Share this article The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons. In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit. A Major Commitment In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters. "I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer." Network Praise Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility. "All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'" A Different Kind of Comedy When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this charming family go about their everyday routines. In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts. “There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.” The Path Forward With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan. The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
