Keith Baker along with Monte Cook Will Lead Classes at Dungeon Master Academy

Since 2018, a specialized event organizer has been hosting deeply engaging experiences where expert DMs manage fantasy roleplaying games in old manors in the UK and at a U.S. castle resort. The full-service getaways are highly favored among long-time dungeon masters who infrequently find the chance to join in the game themselves, and they often look for guidance from the pros on topics ranging from improv and puzzle design to managing conflicts at the table.

In response, the coordinators began designing a systematic approach to address these questions, which led to the establishment of DMU. The inaugural event is set for January 2-3, 2026 at Oglethorpe University.

“It's possible to view numerous digital guides on any topic and learn quite a lot, but the philosophy was that nothing compares to a live, hands-on session alongside other dungeon masters, where there’s live engagement with seasoned educators and other game masters who are probably in a similar position and also want to level up their game,” stated Jason Carl.

Workshop Options and Cost Levels

Game masters can select tiers ranging from $995 to $2,500, depending on the level of access they desire with the instructors. The starting package includes a choice of four workshops:

  • Core Techniques: Focuses on the essentials of running D&D.
  • Campaign Building: Is dedicated to crafting long-running games.
  • Setting Creation: Concentrates on the development of worlds.
  • Professional Development: Designed for dungeon masters who aim to explore more about the tabletop profession.

All workshops includes multiple sessions of training split over two days.

“The workshops are structured so that you walk away with immediate practical outcomes, increased self-assurance, and numerous applicable methods,” Carl noted. “It's more than presentations and they’re not just static videos. These are sessions that you can attend, gain knowledge from, and then return to your group the following week and put into practice in your regular session.”

Seasoned Educators

Many sessions are instructed by duo of instructors. Universe creation is taught by the founder of Monte Cook Games and the creator of Eberron, jointly leading the craft of setting creation.

Industry advancement includes four different teachers, such as Elisa Teague, a podcast co-host, and Hunter Fell. The extra instructors is designed to offer targeted guidance to attendees with definite objectives.

“Various attendees want to launch their own live gameplay show and share their stories with the world, several plan to produce and develop fresh ideas,” Carl stated. “Several only seek to ask, What's the path to be a DM at something like an immersive experience? Which abilities that I need? Is this achievable?”

Advanced Options

A $1,500 premium package provides access to a opening gathering, a introductory package, and a half-hour consultation appointment with one of the faculty. This marks the debut of the program, though the team has previously run Castle Days during breaks between game sessions at their premium gatherings.

“You could almost run an full two days just on consultation sessions for expert DMs,” Carl observed. “I don’t know if that’s the optimal application of each attendee's hours – I think the formal instruction and the hands-on activities is extremely important – but I suspect it’s going to be one of the most popular parts of the program.”

The $2,500 top package provides an hour of one-on-one time and the opportunity to manage an adventure for five players plus one of the faculty members, who will then provide notes and instruction.

“The goal is for the teacher to assess any element is focused on: Hey I don’t do well with improvisation or I feel stuck in this kind of combat situation. Could I demonstrate a situation for you and get feedback on where I excel and need improvement?” Carl detailed. “Perhaps they want to obtain critique and guidance on a specific world that they’ve been building.”

Coming Developments

Input from the debut workshop will help determine subsequent DMU events. Carl said that potential adjustments could include adding more office hours, extending the program to 72 hours, or experimenting with varied class arrangements.

“I hope that we host such events very often,” Carl stated. “I would love to see several DMU sessions in a given year, in multiple places, and in various nations. The reception has been really terrific. We're extremely satisfied with current developments and I feel it would be wonderful to be able to organize these in partnership with big conventions.”
