At least 64 individuals were killed in a security raid targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's history.

Four police officers lost their lives during the police action in the AlemĂŁo and Penha districts, government representatives stated. Over 80 suspects were detained.

Security forces deployment
Some 2,500 security personnel took part in the security action

Fierce clashes commenced when around 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command reacted using gunfire, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, authorities confirmed.

The United Nations human rights body said it was "appalled" by the security action, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas near the aerial transportation hub is seen as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Local authorities confirmed a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community Response

Community members have described the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Roads remain closed throughout the region.

Organized Crime Spread

The Red Command group has been growing their territory across the Rio state, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.

Local law enforcement reported over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the raid, in addition to multiple guns.

Operation Background

The combined action by various security forces was preceded by a year-long investigation.

Many of the individuals are believed to be members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in Rio de Janeiro.

Wider Perspective

Large-scale police operations are regular in the South American nation ahead of major international events in the country.

The United Nations climate conference COP30 is scheduled in the northern city of Belem in the eleventh month.
