Prepare yourself, as every year beginning in 1999, Pantone announces a Color of the Year. The latest selection, though, is even more puzzling. It is "an airy shade," described by a "ethereal and neutral white."

Laurie Pressman, VP of the Pantone Color Institute, stated that it is "a key structural color … allowing all colors to shine."

How does one describe the hue of a cloud? Fresh snow? Even though some consider white as a color, every hue is essentially a perception of light wavelengths. It appears in a child's crayon box, so I'd argue the answer is yes.

If Pantone is pulling our leg is more difficult to ascertain. They claim, Cloud Dancer mixes well with other colors, provides a calm backdrop, makes a minimalist statement, and projects refined calm.

Responses from critics, on the other hand, has not been as kind. Some commentators have suggested Pantone of being completely "tone-deaf." Trend analyst Mandy Lee described it as "disappointing." Critics have compared it with subtle advocacy of controversial ideas seen in other media.

Right, one would hope they're blissfully unaware that this isn't the best moment to be explicitly championing whiteness... Anyway, how can a regular person who doesn't follow a fashion show use this information in my world? My kitchen ceiling is my kitchen ceiling white, does that qualify?
